Welcome to ‘An interview with…’, where we sit down with the Leslie Clark team members to discuss their insights and experiences.

In this inaugural interview, we are delighted to introduce Brian Young, one of our managing partners and a seasoned expert in the construction industry with a particular interest in Retail and Leisure and has established a reputation as a leader in this sector.

Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to a career in construction consultancy?

My career in construction consultancy started from a chat with a career advisor at secondary school. I expressed my desire not to be confined to an office-type career. The advisor suggested I consider construction and introduced me to a course leader at a local technical college. That introduction led to a full-time, multi-disciplinary course, and my journey in construction began.

Can you discuss some of the significant projects you have worked on at Leslie Clark?

I have had the privilege of working with some great clients over the years. For example, we managed an extensive rollout of new stores for New Look, which was incredibly rewarding. Helping Victoria’s Secret establish their large stores in the UK, was a great experience and challenged us to use all our skills to help them navigate the UK market.

More recently, we have worked with high-profile retailers such as Sainsbury’s, H&M, Starbucks, and Watches of Switzerland, delivering new and refurbished units around the UK and Ireland.

On the Leisure side, we have a lead role working with easyHotel, delivering hotels around the UK and Ireland. We are also working with a number of Developers, providing Turn-key hotels to high-profile Brands, and we have the privilege of working with independent hoteliers with their refurbishment and expansion plans.

How would you describe Leslie Clark’s company culture?

We operate a very flat structure at Leslie Clark, and all partners remain committed to project delivery. We have an open and inclusive working environment with the aim that every team member feels valued and can approach any partner at any time.

Sustainability is a significant focus for Leslie Clark. Can you share any specific initiatives or projects that highlight this commitment?

We are leading the team in delivering on easyHotel’s promise to reduce their carbon emissions. This includes product selection using recycled materials, leading a programme of works installing PV panels, and implementing air-sourced heat pumps.

What sets Leslie Clark apart in delivering value to its clients?

All our clients benefit from a partner-led team actively involved in the projects, bringing experience and expertise to every stage.

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in construction consultancy?

Go for it! I feel fortunate to work in the built environment, tackling diverse projects and solving challenges that improve the quality of life and experiences for everyone. It is important to stay curious, continuously seek learning opportunities, and build strong relationships within the industry. Never underestimate the value of hands-on experience, and always be open to new ideas and technologies.
