Welcome to the next edition of ‘An interview with…’, where we sit down with Leslie Clark team members to explore their insights and experiences.

In this edition, we spoke with John Robbins, a partner at Leslie Clark, about his journey into construction consultancy. John shares his thoughts on leadership, sustainability, and the value of long-term client relationships in delivering successful projects.

Can you tell us about your journey into the construction consultancy field and what inspired you to choose this career path?

The careers master did his job well and pointed me in the direction of surveying.  An interest in maths and desire not to be sat in an office all the time led to quantity surveying!

What are some of the most significant projects you’ve overseen at Leslie Clark, and what aspects of these projects do you find most noteworthy or impactful?

The greatest satisfaction has come from developing long term client relationships, operating in successful teams delivering multiple programmes of work.  Personal experience in the refuelling sector has been important and continues to have impact with most of our activity now in low-carbon and EV alternatives.

In your opinion, what are the key elements that contribute to successful project delivery at Leslie Clark?

Quality of our team and a flexible approach, adapting quickly to suit Client needs.

How does the leadership approach at Leslie Clark encourage innovation and excellence within the team?

Working in Client Groups across disciplines encourages greater knowledge sharing.  Team members are encouraged to take ownership of their projects and quickly learn to appreciate the priorities a Client has.

Can you share some of the sustainability initiatives you’ve championed and why they are crucial for the industry?

We are managing major energy efficiency and carbon reduction programmes for clients, using new technologies such as battery storage.  Additionally, much of our work is in existing space, reusing, repurposing and improving what is already available, a priority for our industry.

What do you believe sets Leslie Clark apart regarding client service and strategic project management?

High quality resource and hands-on involvement from senior management works and underpins why we have so many very long-term client relationships.

What advice would you give someone aspiring to reach a leadership position in construction consultancy?

Building relationships and demonstrating commitment are essential, but most importantly make sure you are enjoying what you do.
