Heritage meets modern sustainability at The Harrison

Leslie Clark is proud to announce the practical completion of The Harrison, 134–146 Curtain Road, London EC2 – a landmark project delivered for Aviva Investors. Acting as Project Managers and CDM Principal Designers, we oversaw the extensive refurbishment of seven buildings, five of which were listed, originally constructed between 1881 and 1930, now transformed into c.40,000 sq. ft of contemporary office space.

Blending past and present

This redevelopment carefully balanced heritage restoration with forward-looking design. The works included substantial façade repairs, the restoration and reconfiguration of internal spaces, and the introduction of mezzanine floors, new lifts and modern end-of-journey facilities. Sustainability was at the heart of every decision – from the installation of a 41kW photovoltaic array and rainwater harvesting system, to achieving an EPC A rating and on track to achieve BREEAM Excellent.

Delivering with precision in a complex setting

The project presented a range of unique challenges, including:

  • Maintaining the operation of The Blues Kitchen – Shoreditch’s largest live music venue – throughout the works
  • Managing access and logistics on a TfL Red Route
  • Coordinating 18 Party Wall Awards
  • Safeguarding the stability of seven interconnected listed structures

Despite these complexities, practical completion was achieved without a single reportable accident. A testament to meticulous planning, collaboration and rigorous safety management.

Preserving character, enhancing performance

The result is a collection of conjoined, light-filled workspaces that retain the texture and character of the original buildings while meeting modern compliance and sustainability standards. Extensive external terraces, upgraded cores, and high-quality amenities support a contemporary tenant experience without compromising the architectural heritage that defines the site.
